How to reduce wind noise when shooting outdoors

When shooting outdoors, there are many ways to reduce the problems caused by wind noise. How you choose these methods depends on your shooting conditions and equipment.

Application protection

Most video microphones will be designed with their own or optional windproof equipment (such as our videomic series headset). These windproof equipment include windproof sponge, windproof wool cover and pig cage.

Windshields

The windproof sponge is usually a ground defense against wind noise. The sponge cover on the outer layer of the microphone can disperse and reduce the sound caused by the wind hitting the sound head, so as to reduce low-frequency oscillation. The shell is streamlined so that the wind will surround it rather than enter it, and the tighter it is wrapped, the better. Most of our video microphones come with their own windproof sponges.

Windproof wool covers (deadcats)

Windproof sponge has good performance in reducing small wind noise, but you may need more protection in the face of strong wind. Windproof wool covers are divided into deadkitten and deadwombat according to size and wool density. These artificial hairs are designed to reduce the noise caused by strong wind and climate, while ensuring that they can be penetrated by sound.

Windproof wool covers have the same working principle as windproof sponges. They all absorb the impact of wind on wheat. The denser these furry things are, the better their effect is. It is worth noting that the dense windbreak data will still have a negative impact. It will weaken the high-frequency oscillation and affect the pickup effect. So if you choose a wool cover, you need to increase the volume a little later in the video production.

Pig cage (blimps)

Pig cage (or ' zeppelins'） It is a large tubular windscreen, which wraps the microphone and provides weaker wind noise protection. The utility model integrates a windproof wool cover and a shockproof frame, which can be connected to a handle or a pick rod, and the operation is simple and sensitive.
